Writing has long been a passion of mine, but a lifetime in PR took some of that passion away – it’s difficult to be inspired about writing when you’re drafting press releases or pulling together proposals for toilet cleaners and feminine hygiene products. Those people who told you PR is all glamorous parties and free flowing champagne lied. Well, a little bit, there is an element of that, but it’s not the be all and end all of PR.
I’ve mentioned briefly how much last year sucked – people kept dying around me, family members got ill, marital bliss wasn’t quite so blissful due to all the stress and I started having what I can only refer to as a mid-life panic which culminated with me quitting a job in order to take some time and get my head back together again. And, as 2015 will see me turn the big 4-0, I wanted to stop and reassess my life and decide what it is that I want to do with it. .
Over my period of self-reflection and contemplation (which constituted about four week at the end of last year that mostly saw me lying around on the sofa feeling a bit sad), I realised that I don’t hate PR – so now I’m focussed on a freelance PR career, working at a more junior level but being able to be more hands on and feel pride in a job well done.
What I’ve also realised is that a 9-5 job isn’t everything – and there must be a way to combine what you’re passionate about and making a living. So I’m looking at ways to combine food, travel, PR and writing and this is just the start of that journey. And I’ll be blogging about that, so I won’t go into it here.
So, yeah, I’m nearly 40, I’m married to a wonderful man (who may be referred to as the wino, but that’s because he sells wine and isn’t actually a drunk. Well, not all the time) and we’re getting back to marital bliss. I’ve got a gigantic Sri Lankan family – my niece and nephew are the actual centre of my universe but the whole mad lot of them comprise at least 30 cousins and they’re spread across the world but they’re all quite fabulous. I’ve got a cat who hates me but I figure all cats hate people, until I see her with the wino then I realise that no, it’s just me she hates.
And we live in London. Well, the suburbs of London, where we’ve been for two years but in my heart I’m still in zone 2 so sometimes it confuses me when a taxi home from town costs more than a weekly shop. Also, on a relatively regular basis I get urges to sell everything we own (including the cat) and travel the world, but sadly (or perhaps, more fortunately) the wino doesn’t share my wanderlust so instead I get to be in charge of arranging holidays which I probably shouldn’t complain about.
I’m passionate about my friends, photography, books and making my suburban house look lovely so I’m sure you’ll see stuff about that on here too… My blog is named after listening to an old woman from the Deep South in America talking about how her favourite time of the day is sitting out on her terrace, eating bon bons and listening to stories on the wireless. And honestly, doesn’t that sound just about perfect? So maybe one day, I’ll be living that dream but for now, I’ll be trying to make those stories and stuff those bon bons down my throat and tell you all about them, if you’ll listen along to me. I can’t wait to hear your stories too.
